4949 E. Van Buren St.

Phoenix. AZ

Tour Cost $10.00

The Phoenix Processing and Distribution Center (the Plant)  processes letter type mail and express mail.  They have 56 letter sorting machines of different types processing up to about 30,000 pieces an hour with 2 employees.  They process all the outgoing mail for most of Arizona and even some small towns in southern Utah.  They are open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

We will see the AFCS200 machines, (Advanced Facer Canceler System 200).  These machines process approximately 25,000 pieces an hour.  If you drop a letter with a stamp on it in Arizona, it will come through one of their 8 machines, which faces the letter (puts them all in the same direction and orientation) and cancels the stamp while also capturing an image of the mail piece to spray on a barcode for later sortation.  All in the blink of an eye.

The letters will then go to another machine that will sort by the barcode and be finalized to send out to the world OR stay in the plant to be DPSed (Delivery Point Sequenced).  That means they run the letter through a machine twice and it is sorted in delivery order so it can be dispatched to the carrier who puts the mail in his/her delivery vehicle and delivers it without any further sortation.

They processed well over 2 billion pieces last year.
